We’ve all heard the term “dress for success,” but truth be told, it’s a phrase that typically conjures up images of professionals in high-priced suits. What about truck drivers? After all, it’s not exactly the most glamorous profession. Does clothing choice really matter in this line of work? Well, let’s consider a couple different viewpoints and scenarios.
First and foremost, the time when you absolutely should don a nice outfit is for your interview. While it’s true that if you get hired, you’re probably going to end up doing some grunt work for which wearing a suit and tie just doesn’t make sense, but the purpose of your interview is to make a good first impression. A suit may not be necessary, but a nice button-down shirt and pair of slacks is a much better choice than a T-shirt and jeans.
Once you’ve been hired, the next step is determining whether you should dress nicely for your day to day work. If you’re going to take part in any type of training, most experienced truck drivers recommend wearing something that is nice but that you’re also not afraid of getting dirty. The most important part of your wardrobe should be comfortable shoes.
When you’re ready to hit the open road and start working, your choice of apparel will ultimately depend on your actual job description as well as your clientele. If you’re going to be responsible for loading and off-loading cargo or will be heading out on a long haul that involves overnight routes, the clothing you wear should be more durable and practical. If you’re just driving (not handling loads) for short routes and will be dealing with people more, you’ll probably want to wear something that is comfortable but presentable, such as a polo shirt and khakis.
If you’re truly not sure the best way to dress as a truck driver, you’ve got a few more options available to you. First, you can ask around and see what others you know who are in the profession recommend. If you don’t already know any truck drivers, you can play it by ear and see for yourself what others are wearing once you’ve started your training and/or official routes. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor or someone else in management. They can gladly point you in the right direction.
Dressing for success doesn’t necessarily mean donning a pricey suit and tie. For truck drivers, it’s more about presentation. What can you wear that will not only feel comfortable but also look presentable in your day to day job? Figure this out and you’ll be good to go!
