Driving a large truck in the open can be pretty straightforward, but what happens when you’re moving around in smaller spaces? Large trucks can be difficult to maneuver, making it crucial to understand safety tips and tricks before hitting the road. You never know exactly where your driving jobs are going to take you, so it’s better to be safe when you’re on the road!
Know Your Safe Spaces
There is a “cushion” of space that you need to maintain on all sides of your vehicle: in front of and behind you, on the right and left side of your truck as well as the distance above your head and below your feet. Tunnels and uneven surfaces can each cause problems for your truck, and when you’re negotiating toll booths and bridges, you’ll need to have a firm grasp on the space on each side of your truck to avoid a little scrape (or a big crash!).
Avoid Tight Spots When Possible
While there are some highly experienced truckers who are able to safely back their rigs around multiple obstacles and squeeze through tight spaces without a mishap, it can take many years to get to that level of competence. As you’re gaining that experience, you can keep these tips in mind:
- Go as slowly as possible when you’re moving around obstacles
- Check areas for overhanging limbs or electrical wires as well as road hazards that may be in your blind spot
- Keep in mind that loaded trucks not only drive differently than empty ones — empty trailers are also lighter and ride higher
